I am passionate about drawing and design, but especially concept. Concept is a roller coaster into a topic that opens new doors of knowledge and understanding that can be pushed so far that new ideas after new ideas are born. Nurturing a concept brings so much pleasure and can make me look at people, artists, and artwork in an entirely different light. I procure so much more from an art piece by being introduced to a concept rather than just viewing the image. Honestly, a concept can turn an ‘I don’t really care’ image into a masterpiece. Purpose within a piece creates understanding that surpasses the surface level ideas and provides insight into the work in a whole new manner; that is concept to me.
My current body of work is called “Growth,” this body of work takes a look at growth, depression, power, and isolation. This is, of course, my artist's way of handling the feelings of Covid and major changes in 2021-2022. It was a lengthy time of depression and anxiety for me, but it was also a rediscovery of who I am in Christ and what my place is in the new city of Cleveland, Ohio. I found roots in a church and a new love of houseplants. Yes, houseplants are my subject matter in this body of work. They gave me purpose in the deepest bouts of depression and isolation in a new city during Covid and they express the growth I had personally and in my business. This body of work depicts houseplants taking over the world in an apocalyptic environment. It has them overgrown and closing off our view of human creations or inventions such as a rusty door. This compares my growth spiritually to the overgrown beautiful houseplants and in this their ability to destroy isolation. The plants show the power of Christ's love and the overwhelming feeling of knowing God is for us and always fighting with us. During this tough time of isolation in Covid and the loneliness of a new home, Christ reached out for me and brought light and joy back into my life. This new life is depicted with the houseplants in the artwork.
My large body of work from college is called “Feminist Journey to Self-Identification.” This body of work is a discovery of identity as a woman in today’s world. I find my identity through using my own body as the model, understanding the history of women to qualify who I am and choose to be, and exploring my self-image as an individual and a person of equality. My preferred mediums push and compliment the concepts under this umbrella of work and I am excited to express my ideas and thoughts further as I continue exploring this feminist theme. This work was instrumental in discovering who I am and accepting myself so I could then understand who I am according to God and who He says I am. It is hard to have self-esteem enough to believe that God loves us how we are, but it is true! Once I figured out who I was as an individual through this body of work, I was then able to understand why God would love me. God loves unconditionally and beyond any love I could have for anyone, including myself. If you need to hear it today, God loves you too, just as you are.
I am a multimedia artist. As a child I was the kid who picked up two crayons, one in each hand, and went at it with no concern for a dominant writing hand or for coloring in the lines. My mom had to practically force me into choosing which hand to focus on. At ten years old I was pretending to be hired as a logo designer by my younger sister for her imaginary startup. That is where it all began, I was sold into becoming an artist, but spoiler alert, I have moved on from crayons since then. I love that art can express those words that can't find voices, that it can start conversations, and that it can be a journey to self discovery.
I currently live and work in Cleveland, Ohio where I have settled since January 2021. I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. I graduated with a Bachelors of Art, with an emphasis in drawing and a Bachelors of French at the University of Nevada-Reno in May 2020. My experiences growing up, my belief in who I am in Jesus Christ the son and savior, and studying abroad in France have made me into a woman who strives to speak up for myself and for those who don’t or can’t speak for themselves.
My preferred medium is charcoal and pastels because they provide a sense of impermanence and softness. It is a forgiving medium that can be applied and wiped away in a single swipe, which is both challenging and exciting. Sometimes the best parts of my pieces are the smudged accidents. The ability to blend these mediums together seamlessly is my favorite aspect of using charcoal and pastels as they can be soft and smooth in transition, or a rough and messy blend. I also adore using the reductive drawing technique, or drawing with an eraser. With this technique these mediums allow the white of the paper to come out almost pure, creating an erased line which can be unsettling, but beautiful because it is almost more powerful than any of the darkest charcoal or pastel lines. However, digital work is becoming more common in my work because of the easy use with set-up and clean-up, as well as the excitement of what you can do with a single digital tool.
My goals are many, but most of all I am excited to dive in and challenge myself. I intend to further my knowledge and experimentation of digital art. It is a whole new ballpark of opportunities, textures, and techniques. It is also my desire to share my art with people through gallery opportunities, personalized commissions, selling printed pieces, and doing freelance work and blogging. I want to share my views with others, to empower women with my images, and provide works of art that express images that exist in other individuals’ minds.
