Look into the mirror and be you! Screw that patriarchal gaze.

Gaze Into the Mirror Series

“Gaze into the mirror” is a multilayered varied edition that mixes handmade and machine made aspects to produce contemporary work that highlights the female power in today’s world and plays against the fear of technology in art. The image created in “Gaze into the mirror” is that of a woman looking at herself in a mirror and empowering herself with the act of putting on makeup and deciding how she wants to express herself.

This image is giving power of the gaze to the woman and removing outside opinions and the dominant male gaze that singularly existed in art history. This theme of feminine power and the female gaze are explored through providing a woman made perspective of women and the ways in which women find and produce power for themselves. It is a changing of perspectives, of who gets to decide a woman’s worth and how to express the

representation of women in today’s world. The main colors utilized are red and purple, which symbolize power and femininity, furthering the ideas of women having power. I am searching to produce my own feminine power by representing women in the ways I choose. I am doing this to further equality with my identity as an artist, for the individual.

The “Gaze Into the Mirror” Series is a varied edition work of 11 prints made through an Intaglio printmaking process that utilizes three layers of laser raster cuts on plexiglass with a second hand-cut matte board collagraph plate. It was printed in oil-based printmaking inks on BFK printmaking paper. Other materials included in the process were silver glitter. (Approximately 11 inches x 14 inches in size).
