“Harmony” is a work that mixes handmade and machine developed aspects to produce a very contemporary digital work that plays into the female power and rights in today’s world. This work explores the theme of female power through a quote by Maya Angelou, a powerful inspirational woman. The image created in “Harmony” is that of a river flowing in Strasbourg, France with Maya Angelou’s quote, “A woman in Harmony with her spirit is like a river flowing. She goes where she will without pretense...and arrives at her destination, prepared to be herself and only herself.” Feminine power and the right to travel, explore, and be who you want to be is key to a life of equality and happiness. This work is a mirrored image of itself which further expresses the equality and female power that can exist even through acts such as traveling and exploring cultures. This photograph is from when I was studying abroad in France in Fall 2018. I explored my personal independence and found the ability to travel and be who I want to be is freeing and provides power within.

People say that, as a woman, I should not go traveling on my own, but I found power in it. I believe that this quote and imagery explores women's empowerment and ability to be independent and take care of one’s self beyond patriarcal ideas of ‘a woman alone, is a woman at risk.’ This phrase ‘you shouldn’t travel alone’ is rarely expressed to men in the same situation. It is changing the perspective of who gets to decide what women should be afraid of and how to express the representation of women in today’s world. The main colors utilized are blues that change and get lighter to represent a woman in Harmony with herself. I also included yellow and purple which symbolize power and femininity furthering the ideas of women having power. This is a theme I have wanted to explore and will continue to explore because I am searching to produce my feminine power and represent women in the ways I choose. I am doing this to further the feminist movement to equality with my identity as a female artist.
