Everyone Has A Choice…What’s Yours?
Choice Series
My editioned work, “Choice”, is a multilayered piece that mixes the four plate CMYK Intaglio printmaking process with aspects of contemporary feminist themes. This work surrounds the ideas of today’s female power, personal choice, the power of the female gaze, and self image ideologies. The image created in the “Choice” Series is a woman turned with her back facing out, looking into a framed space that can be read as a mirror. In that space is a reflection of two opposing decisions. Some say it represents a side of beauty versus a side of being bare or feminine sides versus masculine sides. It is a comparison that is up to interpretation. Ultimately the subject in the work gets to choose what they really represent and make her own choice. Feminine power exists through the female gaze and the choices freely given to us through the power. The female gaze is explored through providing a woman made perspective of women and the ways in which women find and produce their self image for themselves. There is a changing of perspectives in who gets to decide a woman’s worth and how
people get to express themselves in this word and to further that idea, the frame contains the words ‘power exists in choice’ repeated on each side. Though it is about self image, personal choice, and female power it does reflect upon and critique the toxic industries that breakdown self esteem and place ideas of what is considered beautiful and accepted in current societies minds. These industries are many, but I choose to call out specifically the beauty industries like make-up and self altering culture and the fashion industries. These prints in particular helped my personal experience with deciding and understanding my power of choice, even when it is against the ‘natural order’ created through mass media industries and thoughts. This series resulted in my understanding of self and the image that I choose to produce for myself and for the world to see. I hope that women who struggle with self image or anything else from above find this work will speak to them. I desire to help introduce the power within of choosing.
The “Choice” Series is an edition of six, four plate, Intaglio prints, made with oil-based printmaking inks on BFK printmaking paper. (Approximately 8 inches X 12 inches in size).
